Mi punto de partida es el desasosiego. Intento cuestionar aquello considerado normal y correcto por nuestra sociedad. Rastreando ciertos tabúes mayoritariamente de origen sexual, la temática intenta subrayar su carácter libidinal y por consecuencia pulsional. A través del acto de pintar y con una pintura al óleo directa, mis cuadros buscan excavar en el inconsciente aquello que no estaba dicho y que sólo podía ser formulado de esta manera. Durante el trabajo aparecen personajes antihéroe en forma reiterada tal como el pintor en su taller o hombre / mujer con máscara. Me sirvo del humor para expresar su sintomatología y su incesante perdida de identidad. Tomàs Morell Brenner Born in 1964 in Barcelona Spain as the second child of a family of four. The family immigrates to Germany at the age of 10. He studied art at University in Nürnberg, Germany and received his degree with a specialization in Painting. After his ... university years he travelled and studied both in Berlin, Köln and Francfurt, and became very familiar with Germany. He also spent time in Paris, where he studied as an autodidact at the "Louvre" and the Bibliothèque Nationale. His work attracted the attention of the gallerist Franz Paludetto who selected him for 2 important exhibitions that defended painting as a valid contemporary art form. The first exhibition “Affinities” (1996) and the second “Pittura”(1997) were both in Castello de Rivara, Italy and were curated by Franz Paludetto and Carolin Lindig. He became involved with the psychoanalytical circuit in Barcelona, attending conferences, debates and reading texts by Freud and Lacan. At this time he began to search for ways of communicating what he was discovering. His interest in the human emotional condition was such that it gradually became the central driving force of his work. He found that by introducing psychological and structural concepts in the form of themes, he was able to express the depth and pathos of mankind, and his objective is that this may somehow communicate itself, opening windows which may alleviate or bring insight to the viewer. Series like “Narcissus” or “Woman holding mask” were among the first of these works. Most of them are oil paintings, painted in a gestural manner influenced by the styles of German Neo-Expressionism and American Abstract-Expressionism. These styles form part of his roots and he considers their “grittiness” to be effective in their portrayal of drama. Psychoanalytical discoveries, for example the idea of “angst”, appearing out of the fear of castration and loss, or the constant use of humor as a way of dealing with reality, are some of the underlying themes in the paintings. Humor, “der Witz”, becomes a constant strategy, to make visible the unspeakable and the unconscious, and by doing so becomes curative.
